What we collect
Only your email address, and only if you type it into the signup box on this site (or send us a message with the contact form, see below). We don’t ask for your name, and we don’t use advertising trackers or sell anything.
What we use it for
To email you about Big Kid Nation games: when something is ready to play, and news about what we make next. That’s all.
Voting
You get a few votes (three at the moment). If you vote on our voting page, we check with Kit (or, if you joined through our second list, systeme.io) that your email address is a confirmed subscriber, then save which Pokémon you picked. In our own database (Cloudflare) we store a scrambled version of your email address, a keyed one-way code, not the address itself, so we can give each subscriber their votes and let you change them. We also keep a scrambled version of your network address for a few hours to stop abuse. Votes are counted as totals only; we don’t publish who voted for what. Voting runs in rounds: when a round closes, its totals (each Pokémon’s votes and place) are published as that round’s results, and when the next round starts, the old round’s votes are moved to an archive under the same scrambled code, so the results can always be checked. When you sign in to vote, the voting page also shows you your own picks from past rounds, read from that archive; nobody else can see them. If you react to a round’s Champion (❤️ love, 😮 WOW or 😠 angry), we store which reaction you picked, and when, under the same scrambled code, so you have one reaction per Champion that you can change or take back; only the totals are shown.
If you play the mini battle while signed in, its save (wins, win streaks, each Pokémon’s level, XP and items, and your trophy shelf) is also kept in our database under the same scrambled code, so it comes back on a new phone or browser. The battles you finish are sent with it so our server can replay them for the Top Trainers lists. Nothing in a save can change a vote.
If you protect your save with a PIN, we store only a salted, slow one-way code of it, never the PIN itself, plus how many wrong tries were made (5 wrong tries lock it for an hour). We never email you about it; if you forget it, ask us through Contact us and we remove it. Please remember your PIN: we’re a small team making Pokémon Arena 2D, so a PIN reset isn’t automatic, and it can take a few days.
If you pick a trainer name, it is shown on the Top Trainers lists (and a round’s #1 on the Wall of Fame). You can roll one from our word lists, or, if you are 18 or over, type your own (no spaces, and please not your real name); it is never made from your email, and you can remove it any time. Names are checked for rude words and contact details, and signed-in players can report a name: we keep each report as a one-way code (never the reporter’s email), a name reported by three players is hidden until we look at it, and we may remove a name.
Your own browser also remembers, on your device only, the email you voted with and the Pokémon you picked, so the voting page signs you back in and the home page can show your picks. With the “Verify you’re human” check below, it also notes which voting round that email last passed the check in (stored as bkn_vote_hp), so signing you back in, or reacting on the home page, during that round asks Cloudflare nothing. If you play the mini battle on the voting page, it also keeps your wins, win streaks and its sound and speed settings there (stored as bkn_battle; signed in, its save is also kept with us, above, and bkn_save remembers which save this device holds and, with a PIN, this device’s proof that it was typed here). The Kanto adventure keeps your adventure there too; played without signing in (bigkidnation.com/play), it stays in that browser only, until you sign in on the voting page in the same browser and it becomes your save. If you sign up from a browser holding such an adventure, we keep a copy of it with us under the scrambled code of the email you typed, for up to 14 days, so your first sign-in on any device can offer it back (Keep it or Start fresh); it is deleted once you choose, and is no longer offered after 14 days (and deleted soon after). The trophy shelf remembers which trophies it has already shown you (stored as bkn_shelf), so it opens by itself only when a new one lands. The leaderboard arena keeps the top 3 you last saw (stored as bkn_fo), so it can replay what changed since your last visit. This is browser storage, not a cookie, and it is never sent to anyone else (only the mini battle’s save, and an adventure kept at signup, come to us, as above). “Not you?” on the voting page clears your email and picks (and that note).
Contact form
If you send us a message with the Contact us button, we store what you type in the form (your email address, the topic you picked and your message), the country your connection comes from, and a scrambled version of your network address (a keyed one-way code, not the address itself) so we can limit spam. It is kept in our own database (Cloudflare) and used only to read and answer your message. We delete a message once we’ve dealt with it (at the latest 30 days after), and never keep one longer than 12 months.
Who handles it
Your address is stored with our email service provider, Kit (kit.com), which sends the emails for us. If our list outgrows Kit's limits, new subscribers may instead be stored with a second email service provider, systeme.io, under the same rules. The website itself is served by Cloudflare, which keeps ordinary server logs (such as your IP address) to keep the site running and secure.
We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages and links bring people here. It does not use cookies and does not track you across other websites.
When you sign in, vote, react to a Champion, report a trainer name, first keep your game with your sign-in or sign up with an adventure to keep, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that you’re a person and not a bot (usually without you doing anything; sometimes it asks you to tick a box). It does not use tracking cookies. We keep only a note that your scrambled code passed, and when, so you aren’t asked again in the same voting round. It stops counting when the round ends, and old notes are deleted as the next round gets going.
Why we hold it, and for how long
You gave us your address so we could email you, and we use it only for that (consent). We keep it until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. Kit, systeme.io and Cloudflare are based in or operate from the United States and elsewhere, so your address is processed outside Australia and the EU.
Questions or deletion requests: use the Contact us button at the bottom of any page and pick “Privacy or my data”. Or .
Your choices
- Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click and you’re off the list.
- To have your address deleted completely, use the Contact us button at the bottom of any page, pick “Privacy or my data” and tell us which address.
Changes
If this ever changes, the date above will change too.
